We all face situations where we need to use something once and do not want to buy more “stuff” to store and eventually get rid of and our personal network of friends, neighbors, and family doesn’t have the item to lend out. Maybe it’s a pair of binoculars for a birdwatching outing or a film-to-video converter. Perhaps you want to try out an induction cooktop before investing in a new stove.
Have you considered your local library for such items? Many libraries now have a “library of things” available for borrowing. One library, for example, offers items in these categories:
- Arts & Crafts: glue gun, embroidery kit, and sewing machine
- Assistive Technology: page magnifier, and magnifying lamp
- Household Goods: tote bag, mending kit, and induction cooktop
- Memory Care: activity board, companion cat, and puzzles & games
- Music and Games: board games, ukulele, and Nintendo Switch console & games
- Personal Electronics: DVD player, USB microphone, film to digital converter, and wireless hotspot
- Science and Nature: birding kit, binoculars, telescope, and microscope
- Tools: digital radon detector, heat gun, soil testing kit, tool kit, and water pressure test gauge
The list above is just a sampling of what is in the Library of Things at one particular library. Check out your own local library to see what good stuff is available there. Also check libraries in neighboring towns as some let non-residents borrow.
